Sweet Home’s Senior American team placed second in the championship tournament and will play in the state tournament later this week.
Sweet Home opened Saturday morning with an 8-2 loss to Philomath, which took advantage of inconsistent pitching to score five runs in the seventh inning.
Sweet Home came back in the afternoon with a 9-7 win over South Albany, then scored nine runs in the first inning Sunday morning to run away to a 14-7 win in a rematch with Philomath.
“That was the highlight, those nine runs,” Coach Tim Holly said. “Everybody hit the ball.”
Sweet Home then lost 6-3 to undefeated Stayton, which broke open a 3-3 game in the sixth inning to score three runs on an error.
Sweet Home will play Thursday in the 12-team state tournament in Reedville, near Hillsboro.
