With the season winding down, Sweet Home’s boys and girls swim teams continued their surge through dual meet competition, winning a matchup with Philomath and Junction City Friday by nearly identical scores to run their season records to 18-0.
Now, says Coach Doug Peargin, the Huskies are going to find out how good they really are.
With districts two weeks away, on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 9-10, Sweet Home will visit South Albany Saturday, Jan. 27, for the Albany Spring Invitational, in the same pool the district meet will be held.
“This meet will let us compete in the District meet pool two weeks before District and help get us mentally ready for a big meet like District,” Coach Doug Peargin said.
In Friday’s meet, Sweet Home’s girls scored 72 points, outswimming Philomath (53) and Junction City (45).
On the boys side, the Huskies scored 76 points, with Junction City second (53) and Philomath third (37).
Freshman Kieran Schaefer was a double winner for the boys, taking first in the 50 freestyle (24.6) and the 100 free (53.6). Other individual winners for Sweet Home were freshman Jayce Calhoon in the 100 butterfly (59.4), freshman Michael Simmons in the 500 freestyle and senior Cole Stumbaugh in the 200 free (2:03.3). The boys also won all three relays.
Nichole Martin and Sarah Rosa were double winners for the girls. Rosa, a junior, took the 100 backstroke (1:09.7) and the 100 butterfly (1:07.4), while Martin took the 500 freestyle in 5:56.4 and the 200 Intermediate Medley in 2:31.4. Jessica Trautwein, a senior, was the other individual winner for the girls, taking first in the 50 freestyle (27.7).
The girls also won the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay.
“We can see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Peargin said. “We’re starting to do a few less yards during practices and getting ready to go into our taper for District and State. As a team we’re right where we need to be if we’re going to be a contender for a trophy at District.”
