SH swimmers tally 2,185 laps during annual fund-raiser

The Sweet Home Swim Club conducted is annual Lap-A-Thon on Oct. 27 in the Sweet Home pool.

During the event, each swimmer on the team swam as many laps at they could during a predetermined amount of time. The event is one of the largest fund raisers for the team.

During this year’s event, 45 team members swam laps for either an hour or 30 minutes, depending on age and skill level. All the swimmers also competed in a “Pumpkin Push” relay and a “Water Bottle Flip” relay. Swimmers from each of the club’s four training groups were awarded prizes for most laps swum during their allotted time.

Those winners were Lucia Davis for Platinum, (103 laps), Josie Hewitt for Gold (82 laps), Jenna Wolthuis for Silver (32 laps), and Lucas Johnson for Bronze (22 laps).

The swimmer who raised the most money as an individual was Jacob Kennedy, who won an Arena backpack donated by NW Swim Shop.

Other individual prize winners were Sean Wolthuis, Isabel Sayer, Ella Parker, Chloe Tyler, Seth Medina, Nora Pettner, Arman Marble, Taryn Abbott, RJ Abbott, and Rylee Markell. Prizes were donated by Dutch Bros, Rio Theatre and NW Swim.

As a team, the swimmers swam a total of 2,185 laps during the event.

“This was the best Lap-A-Thon I’ve been a part of,” Sweet Home Swim Club Head Coach Bruce Davis said. “We had 100-percent participation and all the kids gave it a good effort

“Aaron and Amy Burke with Burke Logging sponsored the team as a whole with a donation. We can’t say thank you enough to them. When I told Aaron how many total laps the team swam, he was amazed at their work ethic, and donated even more than he had originally pledged,” Davis said.

Club swimmers swim anywhere from four hours to as many as 16 hours per week.

Other local contributers including Wolthuis Family Dentistry, Mike and Glenda Melcher, as well as the Melcher’s business Fun Forest, Sayer Farmers, and Gary and Sharon Yon.

We are so thankful for their support of our swimmers. They made this the best Lap-A-Thon I can remember.”

The Sweet Home Swim Club operates year around and is open to children ages 7 and older. They will be hosting their next team tryout in the spring.
