Sydney Northern slips by a defender to second base during a tournament held on Saturday in North American Fast Pitch 12U softball. Sweet Home beat four teams to win the tournament championship. The tournament had been scheduled for Newberg, but no fields were available, said Karyn Hartsook, who coaches the team with Michael Zanona. She received a text message Friday night asking if Sweet Home had any fields. “You’re kidding,” she thought, because Sweet Home has never hosted a tournament. She checked with High School Varsity Coach Shane Cochran, who gave the OK. Hartsook said she wanted to thank the community of Sweet Home for stepping up to make the last-minute event happen.
