SHARE, Sharing Tree kick off Nov. 4

The Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District’s Christmas for Kids Sharing Tree Program and Sweet Home Emergency Ministry’s Christmas Food Basket program are kicking off, starting Monday, Nov. 4.

Individuals or families who wish to have a child’s name placed on the Christmas Sharing Tree will need to fill out a request form that can be picked up at the Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District office at 1099 Long Street. Forms must be returned to the fire department by Friday, Nov. 22.

The forms for the Food Basket Program need to be picked up at SHEM, 1115 Long Street. They will be preparing food baskets for delivery in time for Christmas.

For those who would like to donate to the Christmas Food Basket Program, SHEM accepts cash, clothing and non-perishable food items.

Cash donations to the Christmas for Kids Sharing Tree toy program may be made at the Fire and Ambulance District, 1099 Long Street, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. All cash donations will be used to purchase toys ad needed clothing for local children.

The names of children and families needing assistance will begin appearing on the Sharing Tree at the fire department starting Monday, Nov. 11.

In 2018, approximately 600 children and more than 200 families requested assistance during the Christmas season. The needs in the community increase every year, and this year organizers anticipate the same.

The Sharing Tree toy program works like this: The names of children and families are written on tags that are then placed on the tree.

Anyone wanting to help those in need are asked to come to the Fire Hall and choose a name or names from the tree. The donors purchase the item(s) on the tag, wrap the gifts, and then return them to the fire department by Dec. 13. The tags that left on the sharing tree will be taken by fire department personnel, who will purchase gifts to fill those requests. Those requesting gifts will be able to pick up their gifts from the fire department on Dec. 16 and Dec. 17.

Sometimes persons in the community are able to provide generously, for more that one child, and would like to sponsor a whole family. An “Adopt a Family” form is available.
