Editor:
After over 29 years serving with the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, I have decided to hang up my guns, put my uniform away, and retire on Dec. 31 of this year to spend more time with my family and explore a new venture: training and educating new officers, deputies and sheriffs.
I look forward to this next chapter and the opportunities it brings.
It’s been a privilege to serve as your Sheriff the past eight years. I will miss working with my friends in the law enforcement community, the people of Linn County, the professionals in the news media, and especially the fine men and women of the Linn County Sheriff’s Office who give so much of themselves in the service of the people they are sworn to serve and protect.
I’d like to thank my family, especially my wife Jean, who has always been there to keep me humble.
I have recommended to the Board of Linn County Commissioners that they appoint my second in command, Undersheriff Bruce Riley, to the position of Sheriff upon my retirement. Bruce has been with the Sheriff’s Office for 26 years, and worked his way up through the ranks. He is a natural leader and has been my right hand man for over 4-1/2 years as undersheriff.
He will continue the proud tradition of progressive, strong leadership of the Sheriff’s Office that partners with community leaders and members of the public to assure Linn County continues to be a great and safe place to live, work, and raise families.
And to all of the citizens of Linn County, it truly has been my honor to have been your Sheriff. Thank you.
