Sheriff’s office urges fireworks caution

June is National Safe Fireworks Month across the nation and here in Linn County we are want residents to be mindful of how to safely handle fireworks.

The Linn County Sheriff’s Office wants you to be prepared prior to lighting fireworks.

Only purchase fireworks from licensed vendors, store fireworks out of the reach of children, read and follow the directions on fireworks, and always have water handy.

Practice these safety tips when lighting fireworks:

Use outdoors only.

Keep children, pets, and loose clothing away from fireworks.

Do not let children light fireworks of any kind.

Light only one firework at a time and move away quickly, never holding in your hand or throwing fireworks.

Dispose of all fireworks and debris properly.

Report any illegal use, sale, or manufacturing of fireworks.

If you know someone is making or selling illegal fireworks, contact your local law enforcement agency or fire department at their non-emergency number. The sheriff’s office non-emergency telephone line is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the number is (541) 967-3950.
