SHFAD battles house fire on Surrey Lane

Firefighters battle a blaze that  severely damaged a home on Surrey Lane, off Ames Creek Road, early Tuesday afternoon, May 6. According to Fire Chief Nick Tyler, the fire was started when the homeowner used a propane weed burner near the house and “inadvertently” ignited the side of the building. Firefighters responded to the location, 566 Surrey Lane, about 1:40 p.m., entered the house and extinguished the fire. Tyler said crews “did a great job” in responding quickly and were able to keep the fire from spreading, despite having two other calls while they battled the blaze. Property loss was estimated at $80,000 he said. One firefighter was treated for a minor injury at the scene but did not require further treatment and there were not other injuries, Tyler said. SHFAD reported the homeowners as George Henderson and Opal Dotson.
