SHHS choir enjoys trip to Seattle

Sweet Home High School choir students recently had the opportunity to work with one of the finer choir directors in the Northwest during a field trip to Seattle, Wash.

Instructor Dean Friesen said the choir returned April 10 from the three-day event, where they worked for 1 1/2 hours with Dr. Geoffrey Boers of the University of Washington.

“Our students made great strikes in improving their vocal abilities during that time as Dr. Boers has a broad knowledge of vocal skills and excellent communications methods,” Mr. Friesen said. “After a dinner break, our students worked with David Cross, the director of Jazz Studies at the University of Washington. We listened to the vocal jazz group rehearsal and got to sing with them in an impromptu session.”

In addition to their workshops, the students took a ferry ride from Seattle to Bremerton and back and went to the top of the space needle.

“Student behavior was excellent,” Mr. Friesen said. “This tour experience far exceeded any tours I’ve taken with other schools in the past in terms of knowledge gained and attitude displayed by those involved.”

Chaperones included Tami Pedersen, Lori Anderson, Marci Anderson, Bill Lovik, Korene Lowen, Terry Lowen, Billie Jean Neely, Becky Friesen, Frank Craig and Monica Sanders.

“We were able to bring everyone in the choir who could leave home, because of the generosity of the community,” Mr. Friesen said. “From donations, car washes, performances, work days and can drives, we were able to raise more than $3,000. Many businesses donated money.”

Business donors included: Big Choice Immune Support, Periwinkle Provisions, Specialty Bookkeeping, Hong Kong Restaurant, Lester Sales, Rogers Floral, Dairy Queen, Smurfit Newsprint, Hometown Drugs, Road of Life Automotive, A and W Restaurant, McDonalds, Mike Farnsworth, CPA, MT, Safeway, State Farm Insurance, JP Morgan Security, Edge Town Furniture, South Fork Trading Company, Groves Pharmacy, Mollie’s Bakery, Sunshine Espresso, Sweet Home Thriftway, Les Schwab Tires, Cascade Hardware, Walmart, Ladies Auxiliary VFW, Cedar Shack.
