The Sweet Home High School drama class will present “The Trial of Goldilocks” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 23.
The play, written by Joseph Robinette, uses a sing-song, Shakespearean rhyming approach to its dialogue, said teacher Alain Brown. The old fairy tale is told from three perspectives, one from a prosecutor, another from a defense attorney and then the traditional story.
It asks whether Goldilocks was a selfish, spoiled brat intruding where she did not belong, or whether she was the victim of three conniving bears. The play comes complete with a hard-of-hearing judge, a harried clerk, two comic lawyers, a jury and its surprising verdict.
The play is fun, satirical and light, said Brown, who is directing the production.
The cast includes 20 students from the class, he said. They’ll also present two one-act plays. One of them is student-written. The second is a skit from Saturday Night Live. Both of those will be directed by the students.
“It’s looking good,” Brown said. “The kids are getting their lines down. The set is slowly but surely getting put up.”
Admission is $2 for adults, $1 for students and $5 for families. It will be held in the high school auditorium.
Brown will begin auditioning for the annual school play in the first week of March, he said. The play’s title is still to be announced.
