Two shuffled varsity lineups easily downed South Salem and South Albany in Albany Wednesday night, Husky mat coach Steve Thorpe said.
“Former Sweet Home wrestler Brent Belveal is the South Albany coach and I asked him if we could come over because we had an off night,” Coach Thorpe said. “We decided to not have challenge matches this week and to wrestle two varsity squads. It gave us a chance to get nearly everyone in action.”
Coach Thorpe said he held some grapplers out of the lineup to continue to nurse some minor injuries and to health up from the cold and flu that has been going through the school.
Adam Zurcher may have had one of the best matches of the night, even though he lost, Coach Thorpe said of the junior wrestler.
Zurcher drew Gregory of South Salem, who is ranked No. 4 in the state 4A class. He was was decisioned 9-2.
“Adam went after him,” Coach Thorpe said. “I was proud of the way he wrestled.”
Senior David Helfrich had another good night, decisioning the No. 3 ranked Healy of South Salem 10-6.
“We’re getting some solid wrestling from a lot of guys,” Coach Thorpe said. “Mike Aerni, Neal Workman, K.C. Stokes and Chad Emmert are all wrestling very well. But, we’ve still not put together an entire tournament where every single guy did his very best.”
Coach Thorpe said several younger grapplers stepped into the varsity lineup and did well. Charles Murray picked up a major decision, Chris Harnden got a fall and Brian Corliss had a win.
The Huskies will take a week off for Christmas break and then head back to the mat room. They will host Sprague and Wilsonville on January 3. Match time is 6 p.m.
“We’re going to get back at it with our ears pinned back,” Coach Thorpe said. “We expect every wrestler to be at his best when we come back and start gearing up for the league season, district and state.”
