Kambria Schumacher of Crawfordsville destroyed the competition and demolished her own course record in the sprint competition Saturday, then followed that up Sunday with a first-place finish in the Olympic portion of the Best in the West Triathlon with a time of 2:20:44.
It was Schumacher’s fourth straight victory in the sprint event.
The overall winner in the Sprint Triathlon on Saturday, which had 197 finishers, was Theodore Casterline, 49, in 57:35. He covered the 500-meter swim in Foster Lake in 6:39, the 12-mile bike ride in 28:42 and the 5k (3.1-mile) run in 20:35. Adam Goulet, 30, was second in 59:08.
Schumacher, 26, was seventh overall, swimming 8:20, biking 33:51 and running 20:22 for a total of 1:03:42. She finished nearly 10 minutes ahead of the second-place woman, Suzanne Middleton, 45, who clocked 1:13:34.
Schumacher won her second race of the weekend to win the women’s Olympic Open with a swimming time of 25:00, biking time of 1:11:59, and running time of 42:21 for the winning time of 2:20:44. Stefanie Bergh, 32, finished not far behind in 2:24:08.
“It went very well,” Race Director Blair Bronson. The event grew by about 100 over last year. “It was really fun, hot, real hot on Saturday.”
About 100 volunteers from various groups, such as the Boys and Girls Club, helped run the event, Bronson said. He thanked Sweet Home residents for their patience as the event used Lewis Creek Park as its base of operations.
He also thanked the Shumacher family.
Her parents and sister were around, helping the whole weekend, Bronson said. They grew produce and put together the post-race barbecue for the event.
It’s the support of families like the Shumachers makes the event what it is, Bronson said.
The event featured elite competitors and included several major championship events, regional, collegiate and clubs.
The event drew 40 participants from Boise State, the College of South Idaho, Washington, Oregon and Oregon State.
