Greg Sipe was named the most valuable player in baseball by his teammates at an awards dessert held on May 20.
Other team award winners included Rookie of the Year J.P. Williams; Dustin Horn, Most Improved; and Josh Slay, Hustle Award.
Determined by statistics and the coaching staff, award winners included Pitcher of the Year Williams; Big Stick, Williams and Brock Cota; Golden Glove, Tyler Holly and Cota; and the 100 Club for not missing any practice or game, Levi Marchbanks, Holly and Slay.
Holly also received the Winfred Hackworth Memorial Award, which is given to an outstanding 15-year-old baseball player by the family of Hackworth, who died in a swimming accident at the age of 15.
Coach Dan Tow recapped the season during the awards dessert.
Five members of the team were on the freshman team last year, he said. This year’s varsity had only three returning players. Young and inexperienced, the Huskies went 5-2 in non-league play prior to winning only two games during league.
“It’s fitting that it’s dumping rain on our last thing of the year,” Tow said, noting the weather outside during the awards dessert.
The weather affected the team more than usual this year, not giving the Huskies as much time to gain experience, he said. A team can play up to 26 games in a season. Usually, the Huskies get in 22 or 23 games. They only got 19 in this year.
“You deal with it the best you can,” Tow said. The young team did well defensively all season, with a .942 fielding percentage overall. The most errors the Huskies committed in a single game were three or four, with many games ending with a single error.
Entering the team’s record book, Cota committed no errors all season, fielding 100 percent. Brad Valloni, third baseman, had a .894 fielding percentage, a season fielding record for third basemen, Tow said. Third base is a tough position to keep a high fielding percentage.
Earning first-year letters were sophomores Williams, Holly, Steven Bidwell, Marchbanks and Cota; juniors Shelby Johnston and Lief Erickson, who hit the only grand slam this season; and seniors Dustin Horn and Slay.
Receiving second-year letters were junior Valloni and senior Tyler Horner.
Sipe received his third-year letter.
The freshman team named Zach Miller MVP; Tyler Mengore, Most Improved; and Cody Daniels, Hustle Award.
The 15-3 junior varsity team named Tanner Erickson MVP; Christian Whitfield and Alex Whitlow, Most Improved; and Jake McCollum and Andrew Winslow, Hustle Award.
