Six candidates apply for vacant City Council seat

Six applicants have filed for the vacant seat on the Sweet Home City Council.

The deadline was 5 p.m. Friday.

Applicants to fill the vacancy are Andrew Allen, Diane Gerson, Theresa Howard, Jan Hufford, Lisa Pye and DawnMarie Rogers.

As of press time, the plan was for the council to interview the six applicants for the curent vacancy at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, and appoint a new council member during the regular meeting which follows, at 7:30.

The vacant council seat was created when Bruce Hobbs resigned after moving outside the city limits. His term expired on Dec. 31, and his replacement will serve until then.

Three other council terms are set to expire on Dec. 31, including Dave Trask, James Goble and Mayor Jim Gourley.

Gourley has indicated he will not run again after serving 24 years on the council.

Two have filed so far to run for City Council in the November election: Lisa Pye and Lisa Gourley, who is is married to Jim Gourley.

To file for the November election, stop by the city manager’s office at City Hall, 1140 12th Ave. For information, call the city manager’s office at (541) 367-8969. Interested citizens may pick up a City Council Candidate Handbook.

The four candidates receiving the most votes in the November election win. The fourth-place candidate serves a two-year term while the top three will serve four-year terms. Winners begin serving in January.
