At the end of a season in which the Huskies never built up much momentum on the track, Sweet Home’s boys and girls delivered Friday and Saturday at the Cascade Conference District Meet at Stayton, qualifying four boys and two girls for the 3A state meet this Friday and Saturday at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.
It was a gritty performance by the entire team said Coach Billy Snow.
“We always dope out the meets and we predicted 51 points for the girls,” he said. “They got 51 points. Almost all of the performances on the track were PR’s for the girls. We had PRs in 10 out of 12 events on the track.”
The girls placed fifth, behind Molalla (189.5), Sisters (131), Cascade (110) , Stayton (106) and ahead of North Marion (38). The boys placed fourth with 91 points, behind Molalla (189.5), Sisters (131), and Cascade (110) and ahead of Stayton (73) and North Marion (62 1/2).
Alex Brown, who was injured last year at districts, was the only winner for the Huskies, taking the javelin title with a throw of 169-4.
“Alex popped that 169 and it held up,” Snow said.
Juniors Jess Keys and Brandon Weist battled to a second-place tie at 5-6 in the high jump, then had to have a jump-off to determine which would represent the district at state. Keys won, but Weist returned in the triple jump to place second there and win a trip to state with a leap of 39-4. Snow said Weist was the last jumper and was sitting third when he nailed the jump that got him to state.
“Nobody was jumping well,” Snow said of the triple jump. “One Sisters kid, who is usually a 40-foot jumper, didn’t even make the finals.”
On the track, Cassandra Schumacher was the one who got the Huskies rolling, Snow said, when she finished second in the 3000 to earn a trip to state.
Schumacher, a junior, was running “fifth or sixth” during the first lap, Snow said, but started picking off the other runners as the race went on, running perfect splits. Bernice Soto of Cascade went out with leader Lauren Loutzenhiser of Molalla, but couldn’t hold thepace, Snow said, and Schumacher was able to overtake her for the state berth.
Schumacher’s time of 11:08.09 is the second-fastest in school history, behind Jessie Schra’s 10:31.72, set in 1991.
“She had a great race,” Snow said. “We’ll try to get her under 11 in the state meet and see what happens.”
In the 100 hurdles, Hannah Swanson, who has been out of the picture for the track team for much of the season, burst back into it Friday and Saturday with her best performances of the year, running 16.64 in the finals, after a 16.67 a day earlier, to nail another trip to state with a second-place finish behind Sisters’ Jenny Boswell (15.53).
Other noteworthy performances for the Huskies came from Hannah McClaskey, who, Snow said, was disappointed in her third-place finishes in the shot and discus, though she PR’d in the shot. Peter VanDerlip (seventh) and Jake Smith (eighth) PR’d in the 3000, Smith finishing in the medals in the 1500 as well. Isaac Villarreal was fourth in the 110 hurdles, after competing in the event barely two months, and fifth in the 300 hurdles. Ole Bond was third in the 100, just missing a trip to state, and Cody Shipp was right behind him in fourth. Bond was fourth in the 200.
In the 400, Tim Faulkner finished sixth, with sophomore Land Florek right behind in eighth, both making the medals stand. And in the 800, sophomore Ramiro Santana was seventh, running 2:10.61 in an event he has little experience in. Freshman Robert Callagan just missed a medal with a ninth-place finish in the 800.
In field events, KC Hanscam was eighth in the pole vault, jumping 10 feet even, Nathan Whitfield placed fourth in the shot, sixth in the discus and seventh in the javelin. Freshman Marc Callagan was sixth in the shot.
Jessica Trautwein nailed a PR in the 3000 ((12:47.70) for ninth place, just out of the medals, while Cassandra Schumacher was sixth in the 1500. Kambria Schumacher finished sixth inthe 800 (2:35.78) with Ashley Danielson right behind in ninth (2:38.82). Danielson also threw the javelin, placing seventh to lead the Huskies and make the medals stand.
Amanda Basham was seventh in the 300 low hurdles, while Erika Snow made the medals stand in the pole vault, jumping 7-6.
