Six named to all-state football first team

Six Huskies were named to the all-state football first team.

They include senior running back Travis Smith, a three-year starter; senior guard, Jesse Aitken, a three-year starter; senior tackle Chris Kelley; senior linebacker Brandon Martin, a three-year starter; defensive tackle Kyle Jensen; and senior punter Heath Belknap.

Belknap was named second-team kicker. Smith was named second-team defensive back. Senior Matt Morneault was named third-team tight end and outside linebacker.

Sophomore center Nathan Whitfield received honorable mention. Aitken received honorable mention for the defensive line.

Martin was named the all-state defensive player of the year.

“I think it’s just a great honor,” Coach Rob Younger said. “All of them are very deserving.”

The offensive and defensive awards “show how well-rounded we are and respected around the state,” Coach Younger said.

“(Martin) has got instincts on the field,” Coach Younger said. “He plays his position extremely well.”

Martin joins Dustin Nichol, Class of 1987, and Matt Redden, Class of 1988, as an all-state defensive player of the year.

“Like those first two, he just has great instincts on the field,” Coach Younger said. “All three of them have an instinct to make players better around them.”

All of the guys, “the thing I’m most proud of these great football players, they’re better people than they are football players.”
