Start Making a Reader Today (SMART) is Oregon’s leading volunteer program dedicated to early childhood literacy.
SMART helps children from kindergarten through third grade learn to read so they can ultimately read to learn.
Volunteers spend one hour a week during the school year reading with two children for a half hour each.
Participating students also receive two free books a month to take home, keep and read with their families.
Volunteers are needed Mondays through Wednesdays at Hawthorne and Holley.
Persons may contact Tami Moss, SMART coordinator, at 367-7176 to learn more about the program.
