Softball juggernaut crushes CG, beats JC

The Huskies won a key game Monday, defeating Junction City 8-4 on the road in softball. They dominated Cottage Grove, winning 14-2 under the 10-run rule in the fifth inning at home on April 26.

The Huskies are 9-1 in league, 12-2 overall, in first place in league and ranked eighth in the statewide coaches poll.

The Huskies host Elmira on Thursday in what looks to be a game that could decide the Sky Em league title, Coach Steve Hummer said. “It would be great to have a huge crowd on Thursday. This is an opportunity to play for what could be a league title at home; come support us on Thursday.”

Getting this win was important, said Hummer. “Junction City is the third-place team in the Sky-Em and defeated Elmira and Newport, both very good teams in the past few weeks.

“We knew this was not going to be easy, but we played well enough for the win. It was tough. We had not played since the Cottage Grove game last Tuesday. The girls were a little rusty, but we battled. Megan (Graville) battled in the circle and competed even though she did not have her best stuff.”

At the plate, the Huskies had 10 hits, with Ashley Cochran, Sarah Wyatt and Shelbey Gillespie collected two hits each. Gillespie went 2-2 with two doubles.

Emili Riggs hit a two-run homerun in the sixth, Hummer said. “Em really came up big at an important time. They had tied the game in the fifth. Responding to their runs was big. We scored three more after her homerun. It really got us going again.”

The Huskies stole seven more bases, led by Cochran and Katie Virtue, each with two, Hummer said. In the field, Megan Rubidoux made a great play in the seventh, and Wyatt ended a threat in the fourth with a double play.

“We had one inning where we lost our focus, but Bayli (Riggs) came in and closed the door in the sixth with the bases loaded and then pitched the seventh,” Hummer said

Sweet Home jumped out to a big lead, 5-0, in the first inning, and the game was never in doubt hosting Cottage Grove at home on April 26.

The Huskies collected seven hits and were helped by 13 walks, Hummer said. “Our kids did a great job of being patient. We didn’t help her out and swing at bad pitches. Between the rain and the walks it was a tough game to focus. The girls did a good job.”

Cochran stole four bases and Wyatt three. The team had a total of 10 stolen bases on the day.

Rubidoux and Wyatt each collected two hits.

“Defensively, Bayli was solid in the circle, and the girls did a good job,” Hummer said.
