Softball team showing some stuff in summer league play

The Huskies’ summer softball team, playing in the 16B division, holds an 11-6 record with 12 to 16 games remaining on its busy schedule.

In addition to five weekend tournaments, the team plays evening doubleheaders in Junction City for four weeks, finishing on June 30.

Two tournaments remain, June 27-28 in Junction City and the state 16B State Tournament July 10-12 in Junction City.

The Huskies won the Junction City Summer Opener 16B Tournament June 13-14.

Top hitters this year are Emili Riggs with seven singles, two doubles, two triples and three homeruns; Bayli Riggs with 11 singles, four doubles and a triple; and Ashley Cochran with 14 singles.

Pitching duties have been divided between Tasha Saunders (5-2), Bayli Riggs (4-4) and Megan Graville (2-1) filling in one Tuesday evening.

Defense has been good, with Hailee Huenergardt turning a double play at second and first last weekend, Coach Chris Hiaasen said. Emili Riggs managed a very difficult unassisted double play at first.

The summer roster includes Cochran, Emili Riggs, Bayli Riggs, Huenergardt, Saunders, Cortnie Cuilla, Shelbey Gillespie, Dakota Hesberg, Audrey McClain, Megan Rubidoux and Mindy Smith. Graville and Kristen Tolle are filling in from the 14U team as needed.
