Pleasant Hill 1
The Husky softball team took advantage of 13 walks given up by Pleasant Hill to ratchet up a 13-1 win in its first outing of the year.
The Huskies hosted Pleasant Hill on March 18.
“For our first game, I was pleased with our defensive effort,” Coach Rob Younger said. “We played good defense behind both our pitchers.”
The pitchers, Ashley Wall and Teresa Lewis, combined to give up three hits and strike out seven betters. Wall was the winning pitcher.
“That’s not a bad first game out,” Coach Younger said.
The Huskies scored 11 of their runs in the first two innings. They scored one more each in the third and fourth innings.
Pleasant Hill remained scoreless until the fifth when the team scored one run. The game ended after five innings under the 10-run rule.
Hitting, Lei Himan-Teves went 2-3. Lewis and Nicole Starha both hit doubles. Jamie Miller went 1-2 with two runs. Jenna Anderson went 1-3.
Selena Culley led scoring with three runs. Ashley Horn scored two runs on four walks. Lewis and Miller both added two runs. Kendra Greene and Susie Sieg scored one run each.
The junior varsity defeated Pleasant Hill 15-1.

Madras 5
Shorthanded, the Huskies hit the ball well to pave the way to a 7-5 victory at Madras over the weekend.
“We really hit the ball extremely well,” Coach Younger said. “We put the ball in play well.”
Miller went 4-4 to lead Husky hitting. Greene went 3-5. Himan-Teves went 2-3. Raelynn Wirth had one hit with two runs. Sieg and Culley each got a hit.
Wall pitched the whole game, giving up eight hits and striking out five batters.
Senior Lewis was playing in an all-stars basketball game, and senior Starha was out on a family matter, Coach Younger said. Both are key senior players.
“It just shows the depth of this team,” Coach Younger said.
The Huskies scored the first run, but Madras jumped ahead 3-1 in the second inning. The Huskies scored four in the fifth inning to put the game away. s
The game was different from their first in that the Huskies got to hit the ball, Coach Younger said.
“I’m real pleased with our progress so far,” Coach Younger said. “When we went over to Madras, I realized that only two girls went over last year.”
That means the team is young, Coach Younger said, and they’re about to hit the better part of their schedule, with defending state champion Stayton coming up soon.
“So we’ve got to get better really quick,” Coach Younger said.
The Huskies hold a 2-0 record.
