Of The New Era
Sweet Home opened its 2006 track and field campaign with Junction City and Marist at Marist Thursday, March 16, and in many cases the Huskies picked up where they left off in 2005.
“They didn’t regress,” said Coach Billy Snow of several key team members who either posted personal-best performances or came close. “They don’t have to work back up to their peak.”
He said he was also encouraged by the response of the newcomers to the team and by the overall attitude he saw from the Huskies.
“The new kids did a great job of figuring out how a track meet works,” Snow said.
“Regardless of how fast they ran, they were competitive,” he said.
Marist won both the boys and girls competitions handily.
Sweet Home’s senior sprinters opened the season with a bang as Ole Bond won the 200 in a lifetime-best 24.0, closely followed by Cody Shipp, in his first high school track meet, in 24.2.
“Ole and Cody both ran great 200s,” Snow said. “They were real quick out of the blocks.”
Bond took third in the 100, in 11.8, while Shipp was fifth in 12.2 in his first high school race.
Tim Faulconer, also a senior, also picked up where he left off last year, winning the 400 in 53.6, just under his lifetime best. Snow said Faulconer had the disadvantage of running in lane 8, which meant he couldn’t see any of his competitors during the entire race. Faulconer also anchored the 4×400 relay and made it a race, making up significant distance on Junction City and Marist in the final lap, Snow said, though the Huskies had to settle for third.
In the distances, senior Peter VanDerlip doubled in the 1500 and 3000, taking fourth in the latter in 10:35.4.
In the throws, junior Nathan Whitfield was second in the shot put, throwing 40-9 1/2 to better his own lifetime mark by nearly five inches. Sophomore Marcus DeLong’s four throws were all over 37 feet as he took fourth with a best of 37-9 1/2.
Alex Brown took second in the javelin, throwing 144-0, which was about 10 feet off his best of 2005.
“That’s not what he wanted to throw but it’s not bad,” Snow said.
In the jumps, Junior KC Hanscam pole vaulted 9 feet, close to his best of last season, and Brandon Wiest, in his first high school track meet, managed a fourth place in the high jump (5-2) and fifths in the long and triple jumps, competing in two of those events at once, Snow said.
“He went 33 in the triple even though his mark (launching point) was way off,” the coach said.
In the girls competition, the Huskies were missing the Schumacher sisters and Jessica Trautwein in the distances, but still had some encouraging opening performances.
Junior Hannah McClaskey won the shot (33-1 1/2), two feet over her previous best, and the discus (98-2), about four feet short of her personal best.
In the 100 hurdles, returning state placer Hannah Swanson four-stepped her way through the race, but managed to avoid hitting any hurdles to win, by 2 seconds, in 16.8. Swanson, a senior, was third in the 100 (13.8).
Sophomore Sarah Rosa was third in the 200 (30.01), followed by fellow sophomore Amanda Basham in fourth (31.4).
In the pole vault, Erika Snow tied her PR with a vault of 7 feet.
