Spikers fall to stubborn Molalla team

A 15-9 loss in Game 5 sent Sweet Home’s volleyball team home with a 3-2 loss to Molalla in their season opener.

Sweet Home won the first game 26-24, came out on the opposite end in the second, 24-26, then won game three 25-12.

“Game 3, we played our game, we were hitting it where we wanted to,” Sweet Home Coach Alicia Meier said.

But the Indians weren’t done. They came back to take Game 4 21-25.

“We had some great moments,” Meier said of the final game.

“We started out with a really good serve, up 7-1. We had good momentum.”

That’s where it ended – or, rather, “just kind of ebbed and flowed” for the Huskies, she said.

“We’re not real consistent yet.

“Molalla had won Game 4 and they had so much energy. It was like a train wreck on our side. (The Huskies) said they wanted to win, but they had no energy.”

She said her team was “trying not to lose instead of going out and playing hard, playing to win.”

Sweet Home’s home game against Central was called off due to the storm and the Huskies are traveling to Philomath Tuesday, Sept. 10. They will host Stayton at 7 p.m. Thusday, Sept. 12.

“It’s good to see our weaknesses now and have the whole season to work on it,” Meier said. “For us, it’s definitely playing strong to the end.”
