Spikers finish with loss, but halfway up ladder

Sweet Home finished its 2012 volleyball campaign with a 3-0 loss at No. 3 Elmira.

The Huskies, a team largely made up of players who had no varsity experience coming into this season, fell 25-13, 25-10, 25-14.

“In the first and third games there were moments of good plays and good defense for us, but we just let them get too many runs,” Coach Alicia Meier said. “They were running some really quick stuff and we couldn’t get a block out.”

She said the Huskies did achieve a goal they set at the beginning of the season, when they were ranked at the bottom of the 4A division, at 42: to move up into the 20s.

They finished No. 28, with a 4-12 overall record and a 4-6 league mark – fourth in the conference.

“I am proud of the girls,” Meier said. “We will definitely miss our seniors, but most of our starters were juniors and sophomors. It will be a good year next year. I’m definitely looking foward to next year.

“This was a really good group of girls to work with. In practice they were always in great moods, willing to work hard. It’s just unfortunate that our win-loss record did not show all the hard work they put in. They came out and gave it their all.”
