Spirit of Sportsmanship

Sweet Home’s crowd was honored Thursday, Oct. 20, with a Sportsmanship Award voted on by the Mid-Valley Volleyball Officials Association. In the first photo, fans cheer the volleyball team on during a recent match.

In the third photo, Darci Garwood, the commissioner of the group, which officiates games at schools in multiple OSAA divisions stretching throughout the mid-valley to the coast, announces during the Huskies’ final regular-season home match Thursday, Oct. 20, that game officials have voted Sweet Home the winner of the association’s Sportsmanship Award, commending the crowd for its enthusiasm, coupled with restraint.

Behind her are, from left, coaches Shauna Baxter, Emily Marchbanks, Head Coach Mary Hutchins, and team members. “It’s a nice honor for our school, for our volleyball team,” Sweet Home Athletic Director Dan Tow said.”It’s a pretty large number of schools. Our kids dress up and get excited and that makes it a tough place to play. But most of the people who come here think it’s great. For the most part, they say they like it.” The actual plaque wasn’t ready to go in time, Garwood said, so it will be delivered later.
