State titlists named Outstanding Wrestlers

Juniors Tyler Cowger, Wade Paulus and Colton Schilling were named Outstanding Wrestlers for the 2011-12 season at the Sweet Home wrestling team’s annual awards banquet Monday night.

Coach Steve Thorpe announced the three, who all made it to the finals of the state wrestling tournment, as the top wrestlers of a team that finished third in the 4A division after winning ____ dual meets and a second-place finish at the Resers Tournament of Champions.

Rookie of the Year was freshman Tyler Schilling, who also was named a recipient of the Ironman Award, along with junior Trever Olson. Both wrestled through much of the season with injuries.

Cowger was recognized for posting the most initial takedowns (48) and the most falls (42) during the season. Freshman Anthony Hardy, who won the regional title at 112 pounds, took home the Lucky Thorpe Didn’t Kill You Award after, among other things, leaving his wrestling shoes and headgear behind on the trip to the state tournament, Thorpe said.

The Comeback Kid Award went to senior Ty Harvey, who may have been down, but was rarely out in his matches, even when he trailed by eight or 10 points.

Senior lettermen were Chance Jucutan, Nick Hall, Harvey, Erik Garcia, Alex Armstrong, Raul Hernandez and Scottie Stockman.

Junior lettermen were Cowger, Colton Schilling, Bob Malloy, Paulus, Olson, David Skeen, Nate Melcher and Zach Gill.

Sophomore letter winners were JT Weld, Dylan Elder, Ian Search, Justin Nicholson, Ty Kirkland and Ben Terry.

Freshman letter winners were Ryan Adams, Tyler Schilling and Anthony Hardy.

Sweet Home will host a freestyle/Greco-Roman tournament Saturday, March 17. Matches are scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
