Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District and Oregon Department of Forestry firefighters responded at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7 to a report of a column of black smoke ascending from the north side of Scott Mountain. Arriving they found this car in flames in a grove of Douglas firs. A Sheriff’s Office report indicated that the car, a green 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix, was stolen from the Brush Creek area outside Crawfordsville and that suspects drove it into a ditch. A spokesman said authorities were unsure how the fire started, exactly. Neighbor Troy Sathe on Scott Mountain Road told a reporter he heard a loud “boom” around the time the column of smoke appeared. Firefighters, right, worked for 22 minutes to bring it under control and left the scene at 7 p.m., a SHFAD spokeswoman said. The car was totaled, with damage assessed at $3,000. The Linn County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police are investigating.
