Goalie Austin Strickler and Kendra Greene were named most valuable players by their teammates during the soccer awards dessert on Nov. 5.
On the boys team, Steven Covey was named offensive player of the year. Heath Belknap was named defensive player of the year. Mark Lewis received the hustle award. Mike Barnes was most inspirational. Jonathan Wilson was most improved. Nick Wirth was named most valuable player on the junior varsity team.
On the girls team, Sarah Winslow was named offensive player of the year. Anne Helfrich was defensive player of the year. Melissa Walczyk was most inspirational and Colleen Coffman was most improved. Greene, Winslow and Helfrich all received all-league honorable mention.
“We didn’t measure our success by wins and losses but by improvement in play,” Head Coach Louis Dix said. The boys varsity didn’t win any games this year, but the margin of loss shrank from 7.4 points per game last year to 3.6 per game this year.
“I felt that was a huge improvement,” Coach Dix said. Though losing seven seniors, Coach Dix is excited about the returning players. The junior varsity boys were nearly all freshmen, and they put three wins under their belts this year.
The girls junior varsity team won three games, foreshadowing further improvements on that team next year, Coach Dix said.
Seniors leaving the team include Covey, Mauro Angulo, Brent Webster, Robert McGarry, Chris Burford, Bryce Beard and Strickler.
