Students win grand prizes in Smokey Bear fire prevention poster contest

Three grand prize winners have been named in the annual Smokey Bear Fire Prevention Poster Contest.

Posters drawn by Krystal Juza, Oak Heights; Brandon Basham, Hawthorne and Miranda Schatz, Foster, were transferred into paintings on sheets of plywood. Juza’s painting will be across from the Point Restaurant, Basham’s on Quartzville Road near Sunnyside Park and Schatz’s on the Calapooia Road.

Some 200 students from eight four and fifth grade classes throughout the district participated.

All poster contest winners are eligible to ride on the Oregon Department of Forestry and Forest Service float in the Sportsman’s Holiday parade,” said Jim Basting of the ODF.

First place winners: Julia Gonzalez, Hawthorne; Kelsey Schultz, Oak Heights; Taylor Fincher-Stratman, Foster; Polly Bond, Holley; Whitley Garber, East Linn Christian.

Second place winners: Maria Kropf , Hawthorne; Savannah Parkerson, Hawthorne; Elizabeth Martin, Oak Heights; Taran Tyler, Oak Heights; Mariah Milburn, Foster; Madeline Tyler, Foster; Jessica Magee, Holley; Brenna VanEssen, East Linn Christian.

Third place winners: Allison Howard, Hawthorne; Christina Anderson, Hawthorne; Mikaela Stoner, Oak Heights; Aaron Rhine, Oak Heights; Brianna Yost, Foster; Keenan Martin, Foster; Brad Pitts, Holley; Briana Cowan, East Linn Christian.
