Students’ winning posters stand as warning of forest fire dangers

Three local elementary school artists have been selected winners in the annual fire prevention poster contest.

The grand prize posters were created by Carsen Perry Holly of Brett Bowers’ class at Holley School, Ava Poirier of Molly Tenbusch’s class at Hawthorne and Hannah Wible of Patricia Kagler’s class at Foster.

This is the contest’s 34th year. A total of 200 students participated this year, mostly fourth-graders but with some third- and fifth-graders from mixed classes. The contest was run by the Oregon Department of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service.

The posters submitted were displayed at the Sweet Home Library. The three winning entries were painted onto 4×8 sheets of plywood by high school art students Krystal Durbin, Schailene Erickson, Raeanna Hill, Michelle Isabell, Kaitlyn Poteet and Brittany Zook.

Wible’s poster will be placed at Shea Point on Highway 20, across from The Point restaurant, Poirier’s poster will be placed at Sunnyside Park on Quartzville Road andPerry’s will be on Upper Calapooia Drive.

In addition to having their posters on public display, winners also are invited to ride on the ODF’s period fire truck in the Sportsman’s Holiday Parade on July 11.

Other place-winners were Kristan Stafford, Christopher Christman and Josslyn Gibbs of Joni Nortune’s class at Oak Heights, Ella Layba, Trinity Nollen and Jessica Driver of Cynthia Davis’ class at Oak Heights, Shyanne Thomas, Seraiah Robbins and Jesse Matney of Carla Alexander’s class at Hawthorne, Anna Miller and Jillianna Harden of Tenbusch’s class at Hawthorne, Olivia Gilmore, Brooklynn Goodwin and Rylee Markell of Michelle Quest’s class at Foster, Maisie Townsend, Suzie Griffin and Gracie Lyon of Rachel Markell’s class at Foster, Richard Stevens and Daniel Gibbs of Kagler’s class at Foster, and Kendall Blasingame and Isabel Sayer of Bowers’ class at Holley.
