The Huskies’ summer baseball team split a week of games, defeating Cascade and Salem Academy but losing a doubleheader to Newport.
The Huskies lost to Newport 14-1 and 8-7 on the road Friday.
On Wednesday, Matt Morneault singled in the winning run to score Lance Carter, who went 4-4 hitting, in the seventh.
“Lance competed well on the mound, and he hit well also,” Coach Dan Tow said. “We had good defensive play by Adam Hummer at shortstop and a couple great catches by Matt Morneault and Ronnie Garcia.
“We were tied up 5-5 in the seventh, and we scored two runs for the final margin.”
The Huskies scored three runs in the second. Salem Academy scratched out one run in the second and third, and both scored two runs in the fourth. Trailing 5-4, Salem Academy managed one more run in the sixth to tie the game.
Carter struck out two batters, giving up 10 hits, five runs and two walks.
On Monday, Cascade scored two runs in the third and fifth, while the Huskies scored only two in the fourth to trail 4-2 heading into the sixth inning. The Huskies, at home, knocked in four runs and prevented Cascade from scoring in the seventh to win 6-4.
“In the sixth, we got a couple walks, and some aggressive base running helped us to win,” Coach Tow said. “We stole several bases, and they committed a couple errors. That helped us pull out the win.”
In two innings, winning pitcher Brandon Martin struck out six batters, giving up one hit. Starting pitcher Adam Hummer gave up only three hits and two runs during the first four innings. He allowed one walk.
Hitting, Brett Miller went 2-4 with an RBI. Brandon Martin had a double with an RBI. Dajon DeMille went 1-1 with an RBI.
On Saturday, the Huskies traveled to Cascade for a round robin of five-inning matchups with four other teams, 20 innings total. They played the innings with wooden bats.
“It was just a fun day to play baseball, a good experience, especially for our young kids,” Coach Tow said.
