Support bill to assist caregivers

A new bill is heading through Congress that would provide Social Security earnings credit to long-term caregivers.

It’s called H.R. 5024 and was introduced in the House of Representatives July 8. It “deems such an individual to have been paid a wage (according to a specified formula) during each month during which the individual was engaged for at least 80 hours in providing care to a dependent relative without monetary compensation for up to five years of such service.”

So e-mail, call or snail mail Representative Peter DeFazio and Senators Ron Wyden / Jeff Merkley to tell them to support and push this bill ASAP! And please ask them.

1. Will H.R. 5024 be retroactive?

2. How are we, the caregivers, going to prove entitlement if our charges are dead?

3. What’s up with “for up to five years of such service.”?

Why a time limit?
