Support your local Marines

Editor:

Once again the Marine Corps Moms are coordinating efforts to provide “Christmas in a Box” for deployed Marines, through the Marine Corps Family Foundation, a 501(c)(3), tax deductible organization.

In 2005 about 12,000 Marines, over 300 National Guardsmen and many soldiers received gifts, filled Christmas stockings, holiday food and greetings from supporters.

Their letters of thanks can make you cry, laugh, be humbling and keep you warm all winter, and some turn into great pen pals.

For some of these young patriots it will be their first holiday away from family and friends. For others, it is the second or third deployment to a war zone. It’s important to let them know the people back home support them. It’s what keeps them going, according to many letters I have received during the past three years.

If you belong to a church group, Scouts, the Grange, a school group, fraternal organization, service club, local union, etc. please consider sponsoring a platoon. Names, addresses, a list of suggested items, and mailing instructions will be provided.

For individuals who would like to brighten up a lonely holiday for troops far from home, please consider making a donation of holiday foods, small gifts, snack items, or comfort items. Donation sites will be set up at the Sweet Home Mennonite Church at 1266 44th Ave; Linn Co Credit Union at Main St. and 10th Ave, and Mollies Bakery on Main Street. A list of suggested items will be available at each location.

Kandi Heath is coordinating the sewing of Christmas stockings and we are in need of donated fabric as well as more people who can help cut out or sew the stockings. Please call 258-7874 or 401-0135, if you can help with this part of the project.

More information is available at marinecorpsfamilyfoundation.com, then click on Operation Santa.

To make a monetary donation for postage and to help with purchasing needed items, please make checks to Marine Corp Family Foundation and mail to P.O. Box 874, Lebanon OR 97355. For more information, call 258-8239.
