Sweet Home track had a big week last week, starting with another giant wave of personal bests in a home meet against Stayton and North Marion on Tuesday, April 22, and then some big performances Saturday at the Meet of Champions, also hosted by the Huskies.
On Tuesday the Huskies finished with 37 PRs on the boys side and 34 for the girls, including some real head-turners.
Junior Elisha Scofield posted a personal best of 10-6 to win the pole vault, a 1-foot PR, which came at the tail end of the meet, so Scofield had an enthusiastic crowd of supporters to celebrate the moment (see video below).

“The kids performed amazingly,” Head Coach Nathan Whitfield said. “I’d have to check the records but that may be the most PR’s we’ve ever had at one meet, particularly on a random Tuesday in April.
“We weren’t planning for it at all, and the kids performed amazing.”
They had incentive, because the field for Meet of Champions in five days was shaping up to be one of the most competitive in years and for some Huskies it was simply a matter of qualifying.
“We got some kids into the Meet of Champs that weren’t going to be in otherwise,” Whitfield said.
Senior Jack Simmons, in his first year of track, was a standout, running a 12-second 100 meters the first time he’d competed in that event, after running a leg on the 4×100 relay team in the absence of Chase Cameron, who was recovering from an injury.
Cameron started the 100 Saturday, but decided to pull up midway through the race to avoid re-injuring himself, he said.
On Tuesday Simmons, who up till last week was primarily a javelin competitor, also ran a leg of the 4×400 relay, which is now ranked ninth in the 4A Division.
“He ran a 54-second second leg in the 4×4,” Whitfield said. “Not a bad day for a thrower.”
The Sweet Home boys finished sixth out of 34 scoring teams in the Meet of Champions, which doesn’t always keep team scores.
“We decided to score it this year,” Whitfield said.

It wasn’t a big PR day for some Huskies, as they faced some of the top talent from 4A and smaller schools in western Oregon, but there were big performances.
Ryker Burr finished fifth in the 800 in 2:03.46, a six-second personal best for the sophomore who has only run that distance four times as a high-schooler.
In the pole vault Saturday, junior Delainie Pratt posted a 6-inch PR of 8-0.
“Riker in that 800 and ran a great four by four leg,” Whitfield said, noting Burr’s performance in the third leg of that relay in which he significantly narrowed the gap with Marshfield’s runner and helped the Huskies to a second-place finish. “And then Delaney, with that pole vault 6 inches under the school record. Not a bad day for her either.”

They weren’t the only ones. Freshman Sam Barringer and sophomore Kaeson Walker went sixth and seventh in the triple jump, Barringer with a PR of 40-3¾ and Walker right behind in 40-1½, just short of the 4-foot personal best of 40-2 he’d posted the previous Tuesday in that event. Those marks moved them into second and third in the Oregon West Conference rankings.
Sophomore Brooke Elder broke 28 seconds in the 200, finishing in 27.99, and fellow sophomore Noelle Helfrich, who is in her first year of track, took another two seconds off her best in the 800, finishing in 2:38.62.
A big performance during the meet came from a non-Husky, Cascade senior Kalina Saechao, who threw the shot 41-10 to win with a 2-foot personal best.
“To be honest, there’s not much like the Meet of Champs, competition-wise,” Whitfield said. “Really, the closest thing to it is state. But all the kids just stepped up and all of them competed really well.”

Next for Sweet Home is the Centennial Invitational on Saturday, May 3, which has 32 teams lined up to compete, ranging from 6A Portland-area schools to 1A-Divison Veritas and Damascus Christian, as well as some Washington teams.
