Surging softball team goes 2-1 in league games

Sweet Home softball (5-10) notched a pair of convincing conference wins last week at home against Newport (10-9) and North Marion (1-12) before falling on the road in a close one-run game to Cascade.

Senior Makayla Guthrie threw a no-hitter against North Marion in the win.

The Huskies beat Newport 10-1 on Wednesday and North Marion 10-0 on Thursday, then lost to Cascade 10-9 on Friday.

Against the Cubs Sweet Home outhit its opponent 10-7 and committed no errors while Newport had two.

Guthrie was the hurler for the Huskies and pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run on seven hits while walking three and striking out six.

Brooke Burke led the team with three hits, going 3-4 on the day. Riley Watkins went 2-3 and had three RBIs. Trinity Victor went 2-4 and had two RBIs.

Guthrie again dominated in the circle the next day, throwing a no hitter against the other Huskies of North Marion. The ace only walked one batter in the game, which was called before the bottom of the fifth inning due to the ten-run rule. Guthrie struck out seven in the win.

The bats came alive again for Sweet Home as well, as the Huskies connected for 12 hits. On defense, they committed only one error, while North Marion had three.

In addition to pitching a gem, Guthrie led her team in hits, going 3-3 at the plate. Katriana Harris, Kelsie Rush and Natalie Smith each had a double in the game, while Rush and Burke led the team with two RBIs apiece.

Against Cascade, which is second in the OWC standings at 7-3, Sweet Home was up 9-7 after four innings, but the Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to claim a walk-off victory.

A Sweet Home error, one of four for the Huskies in the game, allowed Cascade to score two runs on the final play of the evening to win.

The Cougars committed three errors of their own in the game. The teams split offensive production, with each squad connecting for 12 hits.

Guthrie again pitched the entire game for Sweet Home, allowing six earned runs on 12 hits while striking out three.

Adi Graber led the Huskies with three hits, including a double. Addy Vannice had two hits including a double of her own. Harris led the team with two RBIs.

This week the Huskies host Cascade at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3 and Stayton (17-3, No. 2) at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 4. They then travel to Newport for a 4 p.m. game on Monday, May 8.
