Suspicious object results in bomb squad visit Monday

Sweet Home police closed down sections of 5th and 6th avenues Monday morning as a precaution while they removed a suspicious package.

According to a statement from the Sweet Home Police Department, a citizen in the area saw the object and reported it.

After police arrived, sections of the two streets were closed as a precautionary measure. Oak Heights School is located at the south end of those streets, and police informed the Sweet Home School District of the situation and advised the school to continue as normal.

The Oregon State Police Bomb Disposal Unit was contacted and responded. OSP technicians safely removed the item, which appeared to have been an illegal firework placed in a plastic container, police said.

Roads were closed for approximately one hour.

Sweet Home Police ask anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Sgt. Jason Ogden at (541) 367-5181.
