Lebanon ? Aug. 14
The 21st race of the season saw Lebanon Outlaw driver Tory Swayngim end a 20 race winless streak as he scored his first 40 lap feature win of 2004 on Saturday night at Willamette Speedway after starting on the outside of the front row. The 2003 Outlaw champion had been plagued with blown engines and crashes during the 2004 season. For those who believe in numerology, perhaps the changing of his familiar #55 to #21 contributed to his convincing win in the 21st race of the year.
A longstanding track rule that the previous week?s feature winner must start at the back of the ?Fast 16 lineup?, saw current point leader Rob Mayea start at the rear of the fully reversed field. By lap 20, Mayea was in 5th and by lap 35 he had nailed down the second spot. Swayngim?s car seemed to get faster as the laps ran down and he took starter Bill Arnold?s checkered by a five-car length advantage over Mayea. Third place finisher, Scott Byrum, started third behind veteran Dave Kingsberry and Swayngim and held off all challengers except Mayea who passed both Kingsberry and Byrum on lap 34. Dave Kingsberry, a veteran of many years of Sportsman competition, led the opening 2 laps before giving way to Swayngim. Kingsberry then regained the lead on laps 7 and 8 before again being passed by Swayngim. Kingsberry held the number two spot until being passed by Mayea on lap 34 and by Byrum on lap 35. By lap 40, Trevor Glaser and Bob Boyd had passed Kingsberry to drop the veteran to sixth ahead of Casey Vitale, Lynn McDonald, Jimmy Schram and Mike Bennett who scored top 10 finishes.
Craig Hanson and Justin Evans won the two transfer spots in the 25 lap, 16-car B-Main followed by Brad Short, John Campos and Curt Lewallen, who rounded out the top-5 finishers. Hanson transferred to the A-Main, Justin Evans declined the transfer spot.
Bob Boyd, driving the Mike Byrd Super Sport #83 extended their 55 point advantage over Ron Burchard for the 2004 Willamette Super Sport title, as he won the 25 lap Super Sport feature, while Burchard finished in 7th place. Rob ?Candyman? Hoefs finished second over Ron Berry, Dennis Archer and Mike Van who scored top-5 finishes.
David Cronk won the 25 lap Sportsman Main event over Jim Sapp in the ?Mighty Mouse? car to extend his 186 point lead over Sapp for the 2004 Willamette Sportsman division title. Coos Bay driver Jeff Dossiere finished in third ahead of Mike Wolfe and
Gary Archer. Jason Sommer, Brad Landers, Anthony Hopper, Bill Gibbs and Gregg Shandy completed the top-ten finishers in the 16 car feature.
Next Saturday night will see the 30th running of the Northwest Dirt Track championship races. The three-division Dirt Late Model event will have 4pm time trials with racing at 6.30 pm.
