Sweet Home baseball team evens score with Newport after bad loss

Sweet Home baseball came back and beat Newport at home 4-3 last Wednesday, just two days after they lost to Newport by a lopsided 11-0 spread.

In the losing effort at Newport, starter Dawson Armstrong gave up six runs on four hits over three innings, striking out eight. Nathan Aker and Jon Holly entered the game from the bullpen, each pitching an inning.

Sweet Home committed four errors defensively, and the Huskies weren’t able to get things going on offense, recording only four hits.

Russell Holly was able to tame the Cub’s bats in a rematch at Huskey Field just two days later. He pitched all seven innings of the 4-3 victory, striking out four and giving up only three runs on five hits.

Newport was up 2-0 going into the bottom of the fourth, when Josh Wilson drove in two with a double to right field.

Newport answered with a sacrifice bunt the next inning to go up 3-2.

But Sweet Home would take the lead in the sixth, after Brady Nichols scored on a passed ball and Kyle Marler laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring Casey Valloni.

Holly would get three more outs for Sweet Home to close the deal.

On Thursday, Stayton’s offensive firepower proved to be too much for Sweet Home, and the Eagles cruised to a 17-3 win at Husky Field.

J. Holly pitched one inning, and Tucker Weld and Brady Nichols each pitched two in relief.

When the Huskies faced Stayton on the road on Monday, the contest was much tighter, but Sweet Home still lost 4-1.
