Sweet Home P.E.O. Chapter DD presents college scholarships to six local women

Sweet Home P.E.O. Chapter DD honored six young women who qualified for scholarships through the Philanthropic Educational Organization at a “Back to School”-themed tea held Tuesday, Sept. 19, at the Sweet Home Evangelical Church on Long Street.

Delicious sweets, typical at a tea, were served and the table centerpieces were fun with various decorations related to school and learning, including some vintage grade school readers.

The main focus of the event was to honor Samantha Ashlock, Emily Coleman, Madeline Tyler, Ashley Cota and Tiffany Miller. The five collectively received $6,570 in scholarships.

Ashlock is majoring in nursing at OHSU School of Nursing at Western Oregon University; Coleman is majoring in interdisciplinary studies at New Hope Christian College in Eugene; Cota is majoring in public health at Oregon State University; Miller is majoring in industrial engineering at Oregon State University; and Tyler is majoring in environmental chemistry at OSU.

P.E.O. chapters fundraise and contribute to the state and international scholarship funds so women across the country can apply for these scholarships, grants and loans. In August of 2016 Chapter DD also helped Jennifer O’Brien-Dahlenburg receive a grant from the Program for Continuing Education for women who have had to interrupt their education for 24 months or more, and be within 24 months of completion of their program.

Women interested in applying for one of these scholarships should contact Wendy Smith at [email protected].
