Sweet Home police offer Citizen’s Academy

Sweet Home Police Department is accepting applications for its third Citizen’s Police Academy until Sept. 7.

The academy is held on Thursday evenings (excluding Thanksgiving day) in the police department’s training room for 10 weeks.

Students need to be 18 years of age and all applicants will have a criminal history check completed by the department.

Residents living in the Sweet Home School District are encouraged to attend these classes to have an overview of what their police department has to offer them.

During the 10 weeks of the academy, various department personnel will cover a variety of subjects ranging from basic law enforcement to discussions and demonstrations of specialized units within Police Department. Activities and topics include tours of the Police Services Building and Linn County Jail, Patrol/Traffic Team, Detectives/Narcotics, District Attorney and Probation Department, Major Crimes, Defensive Tactics, Use of Force Simulator, Property/Evidence and the School Resource Officer/Peer Court.

Participants will be able to ask questions and interact with police officers. Candidates must be at least 18, have no felony convictions and no misdemeanor convictions within five years of application, and live, work or attend school in the community.

The police chief may waive some requirements in certain cases.

Applications are available at the Police Department, by visiting http://www.sweet-home.or.us/index.aspx?NID=212, by e-mailing [email protected], or by calling CSO Gina Riley at 541-367-5181.
