Sweet Home residents asked to make sure addresses are visible

Code Enforcement Officer Mikayla Rossiter is asking Sweet Home residents to put addresses up on their homes.

Many homes, probably a quarter of them, don’t have addresses visible from the streets, she said. Probably half of homes don’t have adequate numbers showing on the home.

With no numbers on homes or neighbors’ homes, emergency workers can have a difficult time responding to emergency calls, Rossiter said. That can be dangerous for the victims of an emergency or for emergency personnel, such as police officers, as they inadvertently drive by a crime scene or medical emergency.

“It seems like such a little thing,” Rossiter said. “The problem is so widespread I literally don’t have the time and resources to send a letter to every property.”

City ordinance requires homes to have addresses visible from the road. The numbers must be three inches tall and of contrasting color to the home.

Rossiter suggests homeowners walk out to the road and make sure their addresses are visible and that they are not covered up by overgrown plants or other items.

“It’s a big deal even though it seems like a nothing,” Rossiter said, and it is cheap to fix.
