Sweet Home Safety Fair this Saturday at SHPD

Sweet Home Police Department invites children and their families to attend the annual Jim Bean Public Safety Fair, 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, June 18, in the SHPD parking lot, 1950 Main St.

This year’s event will hark back to those of the past, with more activities and participants than in the past two years, due to the pandemic.

During the event, the Police Department will distribute bike helmets and gun safety locks to the public while supplies last.

Children are invited to bring their bicycles. Bikes may be registered at the event for free. In the event a bike is lost or stolen and then found, the registration allows police officers to identify the owner of the bike. Additionally, department volunteers will inspect bicycles for safety and fix minor problems. Afterward, children may participate in the bike rodeo course, where they will learn and practice bike safety.

After functioning as a small bike rodeo the past two years during pandemic restrictions, the Public Safety Fair will feature the return of other agencies and vendors, including the ABC House, Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Public Works, Killzone Hover-Ball Archery and the Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District. Children who get stamps from each one will be eligible for a bicycle drawing, with bicycles donated by Gregory Home Team, Radiator Supply House and Rio Theatre.

Shredding services will return this year as well,  sponsored by Linn-Co Federal Credit Union, and Thriftway is sponsoring a hot dog meal for visitors.

For more information about the event, call SHPD Community Services Officer Sean Morgan at (541) 367-5181.
