Following a public hearing, the Sweet Home Planning Commission approved a property line adjustment and related zone amendment request for the Sweet Home School District during its May 7 meeting.

The move allows the district’s Sweet Home High School to acquire approximately 2,687 square feet of property from an adjacent residential lot owned by a living trust located at 1126 18th Ave. The lot has three residences on it, but the school district will only be acquiring a small section of land in the back.

While the high school is zoned Public Facility, the residential lot is within a Residential High Density zone. The acquired piece of land would need to be changed to a Public Facility zone to align with the school.

Although approved by the Planning Commission, the City Council must also approve the request. A public hearing on the matter will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, during the regular city council meeting.

According to Business Manager Kevin Strong, the district approached the property owner about acquiring the small parcel that measures approximately 35 feet by 77 feet. Their intent is to either use the added space for future career-focused programs, such as a greenhouse, or install a bus loop that could reduce traffic congestion on Long Street and the school’s west parking lot.
