Sweet Home Senior Center News and Activities (Oct. 26, 2022)

Monthly News

n The Senior Center will be open Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11. and buses will be running.

However, Linn Shuttle will not be able to make its normal stop at 1st and Washington stop on Veteran’s Day if the parade is running its normal route. Also, since there’s no school that day, the Express shuttle will not be running.

The Senior Center office will be closed Thursday, Nov. 24, for Thanksgiving and no buses will run that day. Linn Shuttle will be open and running buses on its regular schedules Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, with the exception of the Express, which will not operate because no classes will be held Friday at Linn-Benton Community College.

— Qi Gong: Qi Gong (tai chi) has resumed. Class is at 9 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Qi Gong is a noncompetitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching.

It is low-impact and puts minimal stress on muscles and joints, making it generally safe for all ages and fitness levels. In fact, because qi gong is a low-impact exercise, it may be especially suitable if you’re an older adult who otherwise may not exercise. Come, join us!

Participation costs $3/month.

— Seniors And Law Enforcement Together: S.A.L.T. meets here at the center on the first Wednesday of each month at 12:30 p.m., right after lunch. Join us with your questions and bring your concerns about things happening in your community.

— Exercise: Everyone is welcome to join our group of seniors who meet at the center three mornings a week at 8:30 a.m. to participate in some light exercise and stretches.

Those participating look forward to that scheduled time set aside to do something good for themselves – taking care of their body, mind and soul. It’s a great time to think clearly, breathe deeply or just relax mentally. It is important to remember that exercise increases our mental acuity!

We hope to see you at the center on Monday, Wednesday & Friday mornings. Participation costs $5/month.

— “Knit, Crochet, and Stitch Away!” – Mondays, 10 a.m. to noon: Bring your own handwork and join the fun! All levels of experience welcome – beginners to experts! Or come and learn a new stitch or pattern.

— Jolly Stitchers: This is an independent quilting group that meets from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays each week at the Senior Center. They are looking for new quilters.

If you have never quilted, but would like to learn, this is your opportunity. They have ‘practice’ pieces just for that purpose. This is an art that our quilters would love to share.

— Painters/Papercrafts Group: Our friendly group of artists meets each Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. They get together to share their latest creations and ideas.

If painting is your interest, bring your own supplies and join in.

If your interest is card making or other papercraft, bring your projects, materials and tools and work on them while you enjoy the company of other crafters.

Participation costs $1 each Wednesday.

— Pony Tail Canasta: Come join this group for a couple hours of fun on Wednesday afternoons from 12:30 to 4 p.m.

Pony Tail is a form of canasta, very easy to learn, and you’ll be hooked!

— Computers with Internet access: Seniors are welcome to take advantage of our internet access in our computer room during lobby hours, 8-4p.m., with the purchase of a Senior Center membership of $15 a year.

— Bridge: If you are interested in learning how to play bridge and would like to spend Monday afternoons with a great group of people, sharing great treats, come by the front desk for information on who to contact, or call the Senior Center’s office.

Participation cost is $1 each Monday.
