Sweet Home Sweet Ride Car Show Saturday will honor veterans

The 10th Annual Sweet Ride car show begins at 7 a.m. Saturday, June 30.

The event will be held next to Husky Field at 880 22nd Ave., below Sweet Home Junior High.

“We’re just doing all our normal stuff,” said Event Director Kimi Nash, but the event will present a special trophy, a best of the best, from among all previous best in show trophy winners who return this year and will receive free entry.

“Vendor Alley is going to be packed this year,” Nash said. The Vendor Alley runs right down the middle of the show.

The National Guard will bring a climbing wall, Nash said, and the U.S. Marines will be on hand with a Hummer. The Young Marines will participate in the opening ceremony, which begins at 9 a.m.

“We’re trying to focus a little more on our veterans,” Nash said.

Three groups of singers, including Praise in 3D, will perform during the opening ceremony. All Rights Reserved will begin performing at 11 a.m.

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 585 is sponsoring the burnout pit event, with all proceeds going to gas cards to help families access the services at ABC House in Albany.

The Sweet Ride event is sponsored by Weyerhaeuser Trucking, Pacific Power and The Point Restaurant. Weyerhaeuser will display a loaded log truck at the event. Proceeds from the event go to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, Shop with a Cop and Sunshine Industries.

The event will include raffle prizes and drawings. A poker walk begins at 9:15 a.m.

The awards ceremony, which will includ some 100 trophies, begins at 1:30 p.m. Among them, state Rep. Sherrie Sprenger will present the “Most Politically Correct Trophy,” Nash said.
