Sweet Home swimmers compete in regional, state meets

Sweet Home Swim Club members competed last month in both the Oregon long course state championships and the Western Region Speedo Sectionals.

At the OSI 11 and Over Long Course Arena State Championships in Pendleton July 22-25, Kirsten Sautel, 14, won a state championship in the 50 Breaststroke, with a time of 38:52.

Khloe Sautel, 11, was a top finisher in several events – second in the 100 Freestyle, third in the 50 Freestyle (32.20), fourth in both the 200 Individual Medley (2:57.99) and the 200 Freestyle (2:29.62) and fifth in the 400 Freestyle (5:22.77).

Kirsten Sautel was also seventh in both the 100 Breaststroke (1:25:04) and the 50 Freestyle (29.86), and ninth in the 200 Breaststroke (3:09.84).

Also competing for Sweet Home was R.J. Abbott, 14, who was 11th in the 200 Freestyle (2:17.71), 14th in the 100 Freestyle (1:03.04), 17th in the 100 Freestyle (1:03.04) and 18th in the 200 Individual Medley (2:44.38).

At the 2021 Western Region Speedo Sectionals July 15-18 in Austin, Texas, high school senior-to-be Malia (Josie) Hewitt made the finals in two events, qualifying for futures cut in both the 100 and 200 Breaststroke, placing 19th in the 100 (1:13.94) and 20th in the 200 (2:30.89).

She also finished 83rd in the 200 Individual Medley (2:30.89) and 165th in the 100 Freestyle (1:03.56).

Also competing was senior-to-be Chloe Tyler, who was 39th in the 100 Backstroke (1:07.68), 53rd in the 200 Backstroke (2:28.31), 76th in the 50 Freestyle (28.22) and 82nd in the 100 Freestyle (1:00.99).

The Swim Club is taking its summer break following the big meets and will resume Sept. 13, Coach Kelly Sautel said.
