The Linn County Cultural Coalition and Sweet Home Economic Development Group are funding a replacement for the deteriorating Moondance mural near 12th and Main streets behind Sunshine Espresso.
Linn County Cultural Coalition is spending $800, and SHEDG is providing $1,200 for the mural.
Larry Kangas will paint the new mural before June, mural committee chairwoman Gail Gregory said. The timeframe depends on how soon the wall can be stripped and sealed.
The Moondance mural, which is peeling, was the first, Gregory said. That’s why it was not sealed correctly and is deteriorating.
Kangas painted the Old Scout mural at Sweet Home Lanes, the logging mural at Glen’s Market and the mural at 12th and Main on the old Yo Mama’s Pizza building.
Elsewhere, East Linn Museum has removed the old wooden sculptures from its front lawn and will replace them with a metal sculpture, Gregory said.
The sculpture will be a disc five feet in diameter to the right of the arbor. It will depict mountains and rivers, much like the city’s logo, mounted on an 8×10 wall.
Mark Eisenminger has already started on the footings. David Robinson of Eugene is the sculptor.
The sculpture will take six to eight weeks to complete.
The Sweet Home Community Foundation provided $2,000. East Linn Museum is contributing $3,200, and the SHEDG Revitalization Committee is adding $2,000 for the wall.
“It’ll look fantastic,” Gregory said. “We want something that’s going to be eye-catching and look good.”
The mural committee also is looking at having a second mural painted, depending on funding, Gregory said. Other murals throughout town need repair, so the second mural will depend on how much those repairs cost.
