Sweet Home’s track and field team is improving by leaps and bounds – literally, but the question now is how the Huskies match up to everybody else.
The Huskies had a banner day, which has become somewhat of the norm this year with a young team that is focused on getting better, at North Marion Wednesday, April 16, with both the boys and girls dominating the results lists.
Although the timing system failed during three events, the Sweet Home girls recorded 37 personal bests, and the boys had 34 PRs, with the vast majority of Husky sprinters, in particular, establishing personal bests on both sides.
“It’s hard to pick out any single individuals because I want to say we had just under 70 lifetime bests,” said Head Coach Nathan Whitfield, who lacked a couple of hand-timed personal bests to add into that total. “There was a bunch all the way across and we had a few that had PR’s in just about everything.”
Among the standouts was freshman Mason Tyler breaking the 19-foot barrier in the long jump with a personal best of 19-3; junior Elisha Scofield, who cleared 5-6 in the high jump for the first time, junior Delainie Pratt, who broke 19 seconds in the 100 hurdles to clock a half-second personal best of 18:57, and sophomore Brooke Elder, who knocked a third of a second off her personal best in the 200 to finish in 28.17, all of them winning those events.
Elder also knocked three seconds off her PR in the 400 (1:06.72), as did sophomore Ryker Burr in the 800, finishing in a hand-timed 2:07.6.
Whitfield attributed the progress to hard work by the Huskies.
“This group has been a really fun group because they just work,” he said. “They’re showing up, trying to outwork every other team and it’s showing. That’s why, on a random Wednesday night, when things aren’t going our way, they can show up and PR in 70 different ways. They’re working and it’s showing and it’s going to pay off.”
Small schools are strong in track this year, with some exceptional athletes expected to show up Saturday, April 26, for the Meet of Champions. Whitfield said the competition is so fierce that he was unsure, going into this week, exactly which of his team would qualify for the meet, which is bringing together top performers from 50 1A through 4A Division schools from Bandon on the South Coast and St. Mary’s in Medford to Tillamook and Newberg-based Veritas.
Sweet Home has sure qualifiers in the boys shot put Dylan Sharp and Gavin Tyler, both of whom have exceeded the auto qualifying mark in that event, and McKenzie Miller, who is well under the auto qualifier in the 3000 at the beginning of the week.
The Huskies also have athletes who are under the “alternate” qualifying marks in about a dozen other events, in some cases very close to the “auto” times, so they should be able to put more green jerseys on the track Saturday.
Also, they were to host Cascade and North Marion in a home meet Tuesday, which gave those who have yet to qualify another chance to get in the door.
