Sweet Home woman dies in Hwy. 20 crash east of Albany

A 59-year-old Sweet Home woman died Thursday evening in a head-on crash on Highway 20 east of Albany.

Shelley Nancy Heney was pronounced dead at the scene, according to state police.

At approximately 5:40 p.m., a 1997 Kia four-door driven by Heney was eastbound on Highway 20 near milepost 7 when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a westbound 2006 Pontiac minivan with five occupants, said Oregon State Police Sgt. Craig Flierl.

The driver of the Pontiac, Kathryne Haden, 52, of Lebanon was seriously injured and transported by air ambulance to Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis.

Her husband, Harold Haden, 74, was in the right front seat and was not injured. Their son, Thomas John Nolan Haden, 25, and two granddaughters, ages 3 and 7, also were uninjured. All were using safety restraints and child safety seat, and the van’s airbags deployed.

Highway 20 was closed in both directions for approximately 2 1/2 hours.

OSP troopers from the Albany Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Albany Fire Department and Oregon Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.
