Three Sweet Home wrestlers competed last weekend in the USA Wrestling cadet national Greco-Roman championships in Fargo, N.D.
Taylor Tagle, Brock Crocker and Kris Newport competed for the Oregon team.
Tagle, wrestling at 105 pounds, drew defending national champion Jamie Clark of Ohio in his first match and lost by a technical fall, 7-0, 7-0. He then lost 5-0, 2-4, 6-1 to Cameryn Brady of Indiana and was eliminated.
Newport, wrestling at 119 pounds, pinned his first two opponents, Ricky Ryan of Arizona (:59) and James Petersen of Montana (1-3, :46) before losing 6-0, 6-4 to Andy Skaggs of Missouri. He then lost 6-0, 3-2 to Daniel Swain of Washington to be eliminated.
Crocker went 1-2 in the 130-pound division. He lost by a fall, in the first round, to Devon McMahon of Pennsylvania, in 1:46. He then pinned Mike Merritt of Missouri 0-5, 5-0, :55, then lost 2-3, 4-1, 6-0 to Mike Crowley of New Jersey.
Their goals are to be all-Americans, but with the experience they’ve had, with a week of Santiam Wrestling Camp, then national camp, then this tournament, it sure won’t hurt them next year,” said Sweet Home Wrestling Coach Steve Thorpe.
The three started freestyle competition on Monday.
