Sweet Home’s swimmers turned in a strong performance Thursday, Feb. 2, at home against Blanchett and North Marion in a final tune-up before the district competition.
The Husky girls dominated in depth, as well as speed, placing winners in all but one of the 11 events they swam, en route to 101 points. North Marion was second with 33 points, followed by Blanchett with 26. Nichole Martin and Dani Birky each accounted for four first-place finishes, either in single events or on relay teams. Justine Calhoon, Jessica Trautwein and Srah Rosa each accounted for three first-place finishes. Birky swam the sixth-fastest time in school history in the 100 Freestyle, clocking 58.73.
In the boys competition, Sweet Home scored 70 points behind four first-place finishes, three of them by Larry Coulter in two individual events and a relay team. North Marion’ was second with 45, edging ahead of Blanchett’s 44.
“We showed real well as a team,” said Coach Doug Peargin. “Our next step will be the district championships. We’re down to one workout a day and it should come together at District.
“These kids have done it the old-fashioned way — hard work.”
The Huskies will be at the district meet Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10 and 11, at South Albany. The state championships will be the following weekend in Corvallis.
